Zoho's Sridhar Vembu says AI could make software developers up to 10 times more productive
Zoho cofounder Sridhar Vembu expects AI to sharply lift software productivity while shifting demand towards industry-specific software and domain expertise.
Chennai-based software-as-a-service (SaaS) company Zoho expects artificial intelligence to drive a sharp increase in software development productivity, with productivity potentially rising four to five times and possibly as much as 10 times as AI becomes more capable, cofounder and chief scientist Sridhar Vembu said on Wednesday. Vembu, speaking to CNBC-TV18, said software productivity has already increased by around 30% to 50% across the lifecycle of a product release, as companies increasingly use AI in software development. The comments come as Zoho launched Zia Chat, an AI interface that allows employees to search for information, understand business context and carry out tasks across applications through a single conversational interface. The company also announced its entry into vertical software as a service, with offerings across seven sectors including retail, automotive, banking and financial services, healthcare, education, real estate and restaurants.
“We are combining the unstructured intelligence, all of the global knowledge that is there in LLMs, with the very structured information available in the enterprise in all of the Zoho apps,” Vembu said. He said Zia Chat is designed to combine enterprise data models and business context with AI in a token-efficient manner. Users can use the interface to carry out tasks such as examining presentations, editing calendar entries, sending emails and messages, with the relevant actions embedded into the conversational response.
