Zoho’s Sridhar Vembu calls global tech’s push to slow AI development unfair

Sridhar Vembu, Chief Scientist and Co-founder of global tech company Zoho, said he views calls by global technology companies for a slowdown in AI development with cynicism.

"These companies have the freedom to slow down... If I want to slow down, I can... but I cannot ask the entire industry to slow down... I see this a little more cynically," said Vembu, adding that global AI companies want everybody else to slow down so they can grow faster and monopolise the market.

Large language models (LLMs) are becoming a commodity, with too many models in the market and prices also falling, Vembu said on the sidelines of the Zoholics user conference in Chennai. In the current industry landscape, one cannot meet valuation or profit objectives if they slow down, he added.

Global AI companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic have recently called for a slowdown of frontier AI development amid escalating security concerns. At the same time, both Anthropic and OpenAI have launched their latest AI models, Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Sol respectively.

Commenting on the widespread use of AI in coding, Vembu said while code is generated by AI, organisations cannot hide behind it to avoid accountability. "We cannot tell customers that the system broke (if something goes wrong). We are ultimately responsible for the software... I tell software engineers to use AI but not become so dependent on it that they don't even understand what they are doing."
