I'm a huge fan of audiobooks, and now that I've been testing Ray-Ban Meta's audio-only glasses, I'm finding even more opportunities to listen instead of read.
So when I came across a new tool called PDF to MP3, I was intrigued. It turns PDFs, reports and eBooks into narrated audio, making it easier to get through reading material while doing something else. It also connects with AI assistants, including OpenAI's Codex, so you can turn documents into something you can listen to on the go.
So if you're already paying for ChatGPT, why not put that subscription to work converting the documents you've been meaning to read? But there's an important catch. While your existing subscription can handle part of the process, generating the actual audio requires a separate API key and may cost extra. If you're up for the challenge like I was, I can guarantee it's worth it.
PDF to MP3 uses AI to process documents and text-to-speech technology to produce narrated audio.
According to site, the workflow has two specific parts. Your existing OpenAI or Codex subscription can handle document processing through an MCP connection, while an OpenAI or Google Gemini API generates the spoken narration.
To be clear, you're not just uploading a PDF into ChatGPT and receiving a finished audiobook for free (that would be too easy, although I have created a workaround before).
Instead, the service connects different AI tools to handle the conversion process. The developer also offers examples of generated audio so potential users can hear the results before setting up the service.
