It’s just the right time of year for a new batch of grimy tapes to surface for another V/H/S entry—and the first trailer for the music-themed V/H/S/Mixtape has arrived. These films have offered consistent frights and freaky joy going back to the 2012 original, with Shudder becoming the home of the franchise in 2021.

We’re always hoping that every V/H/S will match the highs of V/H/S/85 and V/H/S/Beyond, and maybe Mixtape‘s inclusion of demented-looking Jim Henson’s Creature Shop puppets will be the secret ingredient here.

“Dance, Dance, Dance, Dance” by Renee Zhan, in which “a studio attempts to reboot a long-cancelled puppet show with a mysterious past,” and “featuring work from Jim Henson’s Creature Shop.”

“Heartbeat” by David Moreau, about “a pair of YouTube urben influencers [who] find themselves trapped in a decommissioned military facility used for sonic experimentations.”

“The Music of Mr. Sze” by Ernest Dickerson, in which “a college film student’s documentary project uncovers the reclusive life of a tormented musician.”

“Death Tone” by RZA, about “a young sound engineer [who] follows her late dad’s instructions to create the ultimate track.”

There’s also a wrap segment in which “GWAR hosts skits and music videos in an MTV-style show from hell,” including videos directed by Tobias Forge (Ghost) and Flying Lotus.

V/H/S/Mixtape arrives on Shudder starting October 9. An expansion of the series, V/H/S/SCP, which is slated to get a theatrical release through A24 in 2027, was recently announced.
