The New iMac Doesn’t Have an OLED Display—but It’s Much More Powerful

After announcing the new iPad mini with OLED display yesterday, next up in Apple’s week of big announcements is the iMac. While there aren’t many splashy changes on the outside (the design is the same), the newest generation of iMac gets a massive internal upgrade to an M6 chip, which is two generations ahead of the previous M4 lineup.

The new iMac is available in two configurations. The base model, with a 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU, starts at $1,499. A more powerful version with a 12-core CPU and 12-core GPU starts at $1,699. Apple is touting up to 2x faster graphics performance for everything from photo and video editing to gaming on the M6 iMac compared to the M4 versions.

A new dual 16-core Neural Engine also allows for up to 2x faster AI processing, according to Apple.

Unified memory (or RAM for you PC people) starts at 16GB and can be configured up to 32GB, though that’ll also require upgrading to the 12-core CPU and 12-core GPU model with 512GB of SSD. RAM configurations with 16GB and 24GB top out at 256GB of storage.

Beyond the chip, the new iMac is mostly unchanged from the previous version. 5K Retina native resolution of 4,480 x 2,520. The base model also only has two Thunderbolt / USB 4 ports. To get four ports, you’ll need to upgrade to the higher-end version. On the front, there’s a 12-megapixel Center Stage camera. The headphone jack also still plugs into the side (LOL).
