The Creator of ‘Crystal Lake’ Explains (Again) Why There’s No Hockey Mask in the Show

Horror fans have known for decades that the killer in the first Friday the 13th movie is Pamela Voorhees—fueled by vengeance over the loss of her son Jason. Poor Pam doesn’t live to see that Jason is actually alive and roaming the woods around Camp Crystal Lake, where he picks up right where she left off in Friday the 13th Part 2. And she definitely doesn’t know that in Friday the 13th Part III (in 3D!), the hulking maniac adopts a hockey mask as his signature accessory.

So, for some pretty obvious reasons, there will be no hockey mask sightings in Peacock’s new Crystal Lake prequel series. The show focuses on Pam, played by Linda Cardellini, and takes place long before Part III character Shelly the prankster thought to pack a mask for his wilderness getaway, enabling Jason to add it to his wardrobe.

However, some viewers may still expect a Friday the 13th show to cough up the image of Jason most associated with the franchise. That’s presumably why Crystal Lake creator Brad Caleb Kane has mentioned the lack of a hockey mask in multiple pre-release interviews.

Most recently, he emphasized it to Variety in a new interview timed to Crystal Lake‘s release, where he noted the absence of the mask doesn’t have anything to do with the notoriously tangled rights issues that have long plagued Friday the 13th.

“There were really no issues rights-wise with the show,” Kane told Variety.
