‘Reasonable Doubt’ Boss on Jax’s Tense Birthday Intervention and What’s Next for Her and Lewis

I spoke with writer-showrunner Raamla Mohamed Hunter about Jax's storyline, the intervention and what's next.

Reasonable Doubt’s most talked-about moment so far this season has been Jax Stewart’s sink-licking fall into pill addiction. Yet with three more episodes left until the series finale, it remains to be seen how the high-powered attorney will take steps toward healing herself and her relationships.

Hulu’s legal drama plunged Emayatzy Corinealdi’s character into a storyline that sees her not only undertaking a new battle in the courtroom for the shady Eric Cropper (Tank), but one that has her fighting her own family, friends and herself: addiction. As creator and showrunner Raamla Mohamed Hunter recently pointed out in an interview with CNET, Jax has a history of it — “cigarettes and work” –, and as viewers saw in the birthday intervention in episode 7, she has to work through denial and trauma. There’s a larger purpose behind her story in this last installment.

“I really felt like it was important after she got shot to show an honest depiction of what it could look like when someone who’s high-functioning and also has a history of addiction — it’s not like she hasn’t been addicted to things in the past — and her father was an addict, so there’s the genetic component…,” said Mohamed Hunter. “What would happen when all those things come together?”

Over the course of four seasons, fans have watched Jax — a wife, mother and successful attorney — deal with workplace inequality, traumatic events involving characters like Damon (Michael Ealy), Shanelle (Shannon Kane), Ozzie (Kyle Bary) and marital woes.
