AI boosts productivity, but only 1 in 10 executives trust it to act autonomously: TCS study

While 84% of global enterprise executives rank productivity gains as the primary value driver from artificial intelligence investments, only 10% currently permit AI agents to execute decisions without human sign-off across business units, according to a 25-country study by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) released on Wednesday.

The survey, titled 'TCS Enterprise AI Study: Intelligence that is Real', revealed that only 9% of respondents consider their AI agents capable of securely orchestrating complex workflows across internal enterprise applications. The findings underline a persistent gap between the operational value businesses derive from AI-assisted workflows and their willingness to grant autonomous authority to AI systems.

Security, risk, and governance emerged as the top considerations governing where and how enterprise AI systems are deployed, ranking ahead of implementation cost, speed, and deployment ease. The study noted that establishing governance guardrails and operational controls remains pivotal as companies transition toward a hybrid "Human+AI" operating model.

Amit Kapur, Chief AI and Services Transformation Officer at TCS, pointed out that enterprise focus is shifting toward responsible scale. "The shift is clearly in AI moving from assisting people to taking more autonomous action with deep access into an enterprise. Productivity is clearly where enterprises are seeing the greatest value from AI today, with 84% of executives ranking it as the leading source of value from their AI investments, though 10% have also indicated that they have seen an uplift in revenue," Kapur said, adding that deploying AI responsibly with enterprise controls will drive the next phase of deployment.
