New holiday data counts ads inside Google AI Overviews, AI Mode and ChatGPT across five shopping categories and shows which prompts ChatGPT ads ran on.
Adthena reported that approximately 175,100 paid ad placements were found within Google’s AI Overview panel as well as AI Mode panels inside the U.S. during the period of June to September. This included five holiday shopping categories; however, the majority of these paid placements belonged to apparel and consumer electronics.
The Holiday AI Paid Search Report also counts 204,489 ChatGPT ad placements in the same five categories over the same months. Adthena sells ad tracking for Google and ChatGPT, and the report closes with an offer for a free trial of its ChatGPT Ads product.
Some U.S. apparel and electronics advertisers may already be using portions of their existing campaigns to serve ads to users who see AI Overviews and AI Mode. The report identifies where the ads appeared, but does not track which ads were clicked, how much was spent, nor what conversions were achieved on either surface.
The total number of ads in Google’s AI Answers (in the U.S.) in this report is based upon a combined total for both AI Overviews and AI Mode. In that count, apparel has approximately 111,000 placements; consumer electronics have about 55,000; travel has roughly 6,500; beauty has about 2,100; and toys and games have around 685.
There are no separate ad buys for these placement types. According to Google’s Help Page regarding Ads in AI-Powered Experiences , all Search, Shopping, and Performance Max campaigns that exist are automatically eligible to appear in AI-Answers.
