Meta assists with scam crackdown in West Africa

The company joined Google, Microsoft and others in a larger law enforcement effort designed to disrupt criminal networks.

Meta announced on Tuesday that it recently took part in a major anti-scam operation targeting criminal networks operating in West Africa and potentially impacting users around the world.

Meta was one of 14 tech companies that contributed to the enforcement effort, which led to the removal of 3.7 million accounts, pages and groups from Facebook and Instagram.

The action also resulted in 28 arrests and shared leads on more than 30 scam centers.

As explained by Meta: “Today, Meta, Coinbase, Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, Starlink, Adobe, and other leading tech companies announced the results of a major joint operation with law enforcement to disrupt criminal scam networks based in West African nations, including Nigeria and Ghana. Hosted by the National Crime Agency (NCA) in London in partnership with the US Department of Justice, the FBI, and several US federal agencies, the operation marked the latest and largest instance of tech companies coming together with law enforcement around the world to share information, take down sophisticated criminals, and help protect people from online scams.”

Meta said these operators had been involved with various types of scam activity, including romance scams, military impersonations and crypto investment frauds.

It’s the latest move in Meta’s expanding effort to address online scams with significant legal enforcement, as the platform works to combat illegal activity.

This year alone, Meta has contributed to major police operations targeting scam centers in Vietnam and Nigeria , resulting in the cumulative removal of more than 5 million Facebook and Instagram accounts.
