Meta acquires multiple VR patents from Sony

The two companies transferred 43 U.S. patents related to specific XR applications and displays, according to reporting from Road to VR and ZDNet Korea.

Sony has sold a range of its VR patents to Meta as part of what seems to be a shift away from VR as a long-term bet.

According to Road to VR and first reported by ZDNet Korea, Sony transferred 43 U.S. patents relating to AR and VR systems.

As per Road to VR: “The patents cover things such as information processing specific to XR applications, head-mounted displays and various XR glasses types, filed by Sony from 2010 to 2022. According to the Confirmatory Assignment agreement signed by the two companies in December 2025, a total of 419 global patents are expected to be subject to transfer.

That suggests that Sony is getting out of the AR and VR business, with Meta being the beneficiary as it takes over the majority of Sony’s headset learnings and systematic rights. This could help to advance Meta’s own VR ambitions.

However, Meta has also seemingly scaled back its VR projects as it shifts focus to artificial intelligence and continues to build advanced AI systems.

Though Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently explained that the company’s pivot from the VR-led metaverse was not as reactive as it may have initially seemed.

At last month’s Meta Connect conference, Zuckerberg explained : “... when we started building glasses, we thought at the time that the metaverse, this idea of bringing the physical and digital worlds together, we thought that that would come first, and that advanced AI would come later.
