Anthropic, OpenAI, xAI and Meta have all spent enormous amounts of money to build out their artificial intelligence projects, but have yet to see returns.
The pressure is rising for artificial intelligence projects to show some level of return, with industry leaders OpenAI and Anthropic both posting massive losses in their earnings results, and xAI reducing access capacity due to non-viable cost-to-revenue calculations.
First, on OpenAI and Anthropic, two of the biggest AI players, which are both looking to launch their respective IPOs sometime soon.
As reported by Reuters, OpenAI is facing another year of heavy financial losses, with the company recently informing its investors that its projected 2026 revenue could be significantly lower than it had previously forecast.
As per Reuters: “OpenAI has told investors its annualized revenue for September was almost $50 billion, a drop from what it signaled earlier, a person familiar with the matter told Reuters on Thursday. The company previously indicated to investors at a separate event that its revenue run rate for last month was approaching $70 billion.”
According to AI Funding Tracker, OpenAI has already weathered more than $20 billion in operating losses in the first half of 2026, with revenue of around $12 billion for the same period. The company had hoped to win more investor confidence ahead of a planned IPO with a better Q3 performance.
But a lower-than-expected revenue result could mean that OpenAI is on track to post a major financial loss in 2026.
Anthropic, meanwhile, recently shared that while its revenue is increasing, its costs are also set to skyrocket as the company spends big to keep up with the evolving AI development race.
