STAT+: After Medicare punts RPM overhaul to 2029, advocates see window to fight back

Medicare regulators this week pushed forward with a controversial plan to ban hospitals and other providers from using third parties to deliver remote patient monitoring services, despite overwhelming opposition from health tech companies, hospitals, insurers, and specialty organizations.

But regulators also offered providers a reprieve in the form of a two-year delay in implementation that’s aimed at allowing time for providers to build in-house services. Advocates representing vendors, hospitals, and other stakeholders see that window as an opportunity to push for another plan.

“The story is that we have two years to come up with something better,” said Christopher Adamec, a lobbyist who advises the Remote Monitoring Leadership Council, a group of leading vendors. “My mission here is to find and move forward a value-based payment pathway or some set of guardrails, or some alternative to this.”
