Ochsner Health CIO Amy Trainor explains why patients linking their charts to ChatGPT have Ochsner weighing a wider rollout of Epic’s Emmie. Watch below or on YouTube.
About 4,500 Ochsner Health patients had connected their medical records to ChatGPT by the end of September. As a result, Ochsner faces a short window to decide whether to expand its own patient-facing AI or cede more of those patient interactions to ChatGPT. Amy Trainor, RN, SVP and chief information officer at Ochsner Health, said Sept. 30 that the decision would come within roughly two months. She spoke on a recent episode of the healthsystemCIO Show. In fact, Ochsner already runs Emmie, Epic’s AI assistant for patients in MyChart, for a small group of patients. The open question is whether to scale it.
When OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Health in January, it reported more than 230 million people worldwide asking health and wellness questions each week. By July, OpenAI had raised that figure to more than 300 million. Trainor applied the January number to Louisiana and arrived at about 1.1 million people a week, which by her estimate is roughly 25% of the state’s population. She also said about 4,500 Ochsner patients had connected their charts to ChatGPT by Sept. 30.
Other health systems saw the shift from the infrastructure side. Matthew Kull, EVP and chief information and digital officer at Inova Health, told healthsystemCIO in September that API calls from ChatGPT into Inova’s Epic environment had climbed sharply. The jump followed the launch of the record connection.
