MiniMed said Tuesday it has appointed Dr. David Segal to succeed Robert Vigersky as chief medical officer.
Joining MiniMed, a Medtronic spinout, positions Segal to use technology to improve clinical outcomes in diabetes. Segal landed the job on the strength of a resume that includes more than 20 years of experience in pediatric endocrinology, digital health and healthcare innovation. At Parkview Health’s Mirro Center for Research and Innovation, Segal helped create a pediatric endocrinology service.
Segal also set up South Africa’s largest diabetes and endocrinology practice and co-founded Guidepost, a digital health company.
“I’ve spent much of my career looking at how we can use technology and data to make diabetes care more proactive, personalized and accessible,” Segal said in a statement. “What excites me about MiniMed is the opportunity to bring that thinking into the development of technologies that can reduce the daily burden of managing diabetes and help more people achieve better outcomes.”
Vigersky will transition to the role of chief medical officer emeritus ahead of his planned retirement at the end of next year. Having joined the Medtronic Diabetes business in 2015, Vigersky rose to the position of CMO in 2019 and helped advance the company’s clinical strategy.
Segal joined MiniMed following a quarter in which sales grew 17% to $843 million.
