Director Zach Cregger, known for Barbarian and Weapons, proved he was ready to tackle the behemoth task of taking on a franchise when he took on the latest adaptation of Capcom’s Resident Evil video game series. In just the first week alone, Cregger’s Resident Evil raked in $60 million at the domestic box office. That number kept growing, making it the most successful Resident Evil film to hit the silver screen.
Fans of the 2026 film are in luck — Resident Evil is now available to rent or purchase digitally on services such as Prime Video for $24.99 US dollars. It is currently unknown when it will come to streaming services, but when it does, it will likely land on Netflix because of Netflix's exclusive deal with Sony Pictures.
Resident Evil fans would be the first to tell you that most adaptations of the video game franchise have been disappointing. They either stray wildly from established video game canon or rehash stories fans have already played through — only much worse.
Mixed-to-negative feelings about Cregger’s adaptation, however, are nowhere to be found. Not only has Resident Evil continued to break box office records long after its debut, but fan opinion also leans positively toward Cregger’s adaptation as being true and authentic to the Resident Evil experience. Simply put: Cregger’s Resident Evil isn’t just the most successful adaptation of the franchise, but the most beloved too.
Cregger’s Resident Evil is a soft reboot of the franchise, but rather than following an epic, scrappy hero like Leon Kennedy, it centers on Bryan, an exhausted, put-upon medical courier played by Austin Abrams.
