Resident Evil director Zach Cregger says that he’d still want to "have a hand" in potential sequels for his hit horror adaptation, despite swearing off future "franchise" films.
Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil adaptation was a hit at the box office, but its reception was starkly different among hardcore fans of the original games. Rather than attempting to retell stories players have already experienced, he opted for a different approach by following an average Joe as he navigates the chaos of the Raccoon City Incident — and this rubbed a vocal portion of the fanbase the wrong way.
As a result, Cregger has adamantly decided against ever working on a "franchise" again, a word he used on an episode of The Town with Matthew Belloni.
"If there were five Resident Evil movies that you just produced but didn’t write or direct, would you be okay with that, or not?" the host asked him.
"I would want to have some hand in them," Cregger answered. "I can’t help but have an idea for where that franchise — I’m calling it a franchise — could go. So, certainly."
This isn’t the first time Cregger has mentioned his vision for a sequel to his Resident Evil movie; he spoke about the possibility with The Playlist in September, saying he "can’t help thinking about other places this story could go."
"With Barbarian, I’ve never entertained the idea of a sequel or another movie in that universe because that story is, at its heart, so foul," he continued.
