A million viewers sounds like a healthy lobby. For the Worlds 2026 Play-In, though, a peak of 1,021,367 was the lowest since 2019, and a sharp retreat from the two editions before it. Audience figures from Esports Charts, reported by Sheep Esports, put the peak 59.22% below 2025 and 28.75% below 2024.
That is a warning light for the tournament’s opening stage, not a verdict on Worlds as a whole. The Play-In’s audience was smaller than in recent editions, while the Swiss Stage and later rounds still had the chance to pull viewers back in. For readers following the Worlds 2026 Play-In format and stakes, the headline number makes for a strikingly cold start.
The gap to last year is enormous, but the comparison comes with a heavyweight asterisk. The 2025 Play-In peaked at 2,503,910 viewers during a highly anticipated T1 versus Invictus Gaming matchup; in 2026, the peak was 1,021,367. That is a steep year-on-year fall, even if the 2025 match gave the previous edition an unusually powerful audience magnet.
The historical comparison is just as blunt. In 2019, DAMWON Gaming’s match against Lowkey Esports reached 1,006,908 viewers, putting this year’s peak only 14,459 higher. After several editions with stronger peaks, the Play-In has landed almost back on that old mark.
The event’s bracket also mattered to how the record was set. The opening-day series between Karmine Corp and Cloud9 drew the Play-In’s largest audience, while Karmine Corp’s later matches against MVK Esports ended in one-sided 3-0 wins.
