World of Warcraft Forever launched last night, and while there were a ton of people playing, the servers were remarkably stable. It turns out that Blizzard dedicated a ton of resources to making sure those servers were solid.
Last night, after the game launched, Blizzard tweeted out a meme from its World of Warcraft account, with a Gnome tapping a car with the WoW Forever logo, with a caption saying: "*Slaps Roof of WoW: Forever* This baby is running on: 3,924 Virtual Machines, 251,136 GB of Memory, 70,480 CPU Cores." That's a huge amount of memory, and it seems to have paid off with the smoothest Blizzard launch I've seen in years.
Blizzard's post bragging about the sheer amount of memory in its servers comes just a week after Sam Altman said in a podcast that it was "quite terrible" for people to have RAM in their own computers, rather than in a data center. Of course, he did later walk it back, instead claiming that he had "been arguing for the world to ramp up memory production for a long time." Still, that's 251,136GB of RAM that's dedicated to running an incredible MMO, rather than powering yet another data center.

Blizzard Executive Producer and Vice President for World of Warcraft Holly Longdale also posted celebrating the smooth launch, and said "this launch was crazier than the insanity we imagined but thankfully the team built plans and contingencies.
