In recent years, the cozy genre has suffered from what I like to call the Harvest Moon hangover. For over a decade, it feels like nearly every crafting game has asked us to adopt the same persona: an urbanite who inherits a dilapidated farm, grabs an axe, and proceeds to clear-cut a forest in the name of personal relaxation. We chop down trees, strip-mine for iron ore, and call it wholesome.
Qloud Games’ long-awaited solarpunk MMO, Loftia, doesn’t ask you to deforest a valley. Instead, it invites you onto a floating metropolis that treats sustainability as more than a buzzword. In Loftia, energy systems and resource recycling are embedded directly into how you play. You’ll find yourself generating solar power, upcycling materials, and tending to hydroponic setups rather than blindly harvesting finite resources. It’s an eco-optimism that makes other cozy crafting games feel a tad archaic by comparison.
Loftia’s futuristic, eco-city backdrop is thought out. It balances utopian architecture with charming details. The world feels alive, populated by charming NPCs and dozens of real players bustling around the main plazas as they take on community initiatives and set off on joint adventures.
Loftia earns the ‘MMO’ tag in a way few indie games manage to pull off. Rather than placing your home on an isolated, sad little island where you only see other human beings via an explicit invite code, your residence sits within a neighborhood. Having houses populate near your own makes for a social atmosphere. If I want to be a social butterfly and wave at my neighbors while running errands, the community hub is right there; if I want to retreat into my own bubble and obsess over decorating for hours uninterrupted, I can do that too.
