If you were worried about whether The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time's remake could live up to the hype of following in the footsteps of the highest-rated game ever, you can almost certainly put those fears to bed. The reviews for the remake are in, and 2026's Ocarina has almost hit that impossible benchmark set by the original.
The Ocarina remake currently has a 96 on Metacritic and a 95 on OpenCritic. Those scores might jump around a little bit as more reviews are published and their scores accounted for, but it's almost certain that the remake will take the lead for the highest-rated game of the year so far.
It's also about as close as you could hope the game would get to the 99 the original Ocarina scored in 1998. Not only does the N64 game's almost-perfect score make it the highest-rated game of all time, but with fewer reviews published back then, it's a record that will almost certainly never be beaten. If what sounds like a near-perfect remake of the same game can't beat it, then it's difficult to imagine what can.
For comparison, the original Ocarina has 22 published reviews. Its remake already has 48.
As for why those lucky enough to review the remake are giving it such high scores, here at TheGamer , where we awarded the new Ocarina a perfect 5/5, Collin Macgregor writes, "A beautiful, engrossing fantasy adventure that maintains its thrilling combat encounters, clever puzzles, and unique charm.
