The Far Side: 10 Funniest Comics About American History, Ranked

Far Side comics had several recurring subjects throughout its 15-year run. Far Side focused on everything from dinosaurs and cows to human stupidity and even American history. Gary Larson used these subjects to deliver his absurd sense of humor, and he didn't shy from making American history look silly. Far Side comics parodied George Washington and the Revolutionary War as well as the Old West.

History has always been a ripe subject for humor. It's a topic with which most people have some familiarity, and the past is full of serious moments that are good targets for lampooning. The internet has shown how much Americans like to make fun of their own history, and Gary Larson shows how much fun that can be with his trademark bizarre Far Side humor.

The Manhattan Project was the top secret American effort to create the first atomic bomb. It was helmed by J. Robert Oppenheimer and was done to preempt Nazi Germany from trying to create a similar weapon. On July 16, 1945, the first atomic bomb was detonated in Los Alamos, New Mexico. The nuclear bomb would later be used on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan.

Mistakes are made all the time, and some were presumably made on the path to creating the first nuclear bomb (in fact, a scientist named Donald Mastick ingested a small amount of plutonium during the Manhattan Project). This Far Side comic imagines a mistake in the presentation of the bomb, with the slide showing the infamous mushroom cloud upside down.
