One of my favorite things about open-world RPGs is how easy it can be to get distracted from whatever I'm supposed to be doing, especially when there's something in the distance that looks a little too interesting to ignore. I've spent hundreds of hours wandering around in games like Skyrim and Elden Ring, sometimes completely forgetting what I originally set out to accomplish. But I think that's part of what makes the genre so appealing, because some of the most memorable experiences these games have to offer aren't necessarily found by following the main quest. In fact, there are plenty of occasions when getting lost can lead to something considerably more rewarding than whatever players were originally looking for.
