Tetris makes North American in-car debut at NY Comic Con with Volkswagen, AirConsole

Tetris, the globally recognizable puzzle game, announced its North American in-car debut early Thursday morning at New York Comic Con, playable on the infotainment display of Volkswagen’s 2027 Atlas through the AirConsole platform, according to a press release. In the new, in-car version, players use their smartphones as controllers, and up to four passengers can compete at once.

The activation is set to run from October 8 to 11 at the Javits Center in New York, where more than 250,000 visitors are expected, according to the company’s press announcement. Attendees can climb into the Atlas at the Pop Insider booth, number 1935, and try the game out for themselves.

The game’s in-car lighting features are what set it apart from other versions. As players clear lines, the cabin’s ambient lighting syncs to the color of the cleared line, extending the game beyond the screen and into the car. The lighting effects are available only in select models and trims, according to the release.

The demo offers four modes. Sprint challenges players to clear 40 lines as fast as possible, solo or against others. Marathon is the classic score chase, now open to solo and multiplayer play. Battle pits players head to head, with cleared lines putting pressure on opponents. Online Battle matches car players around the world or lets friends set up a private room.

“Tetris is one of the most recognized and iconic video game brands in the world,” Maya Rogers, chief executive officer of The Tetris Company, said in this morning’s announcement.
