Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 feels like a breath of fresh air for the series in a lot of ways due to its new backdrop. The latest entry in the series takes place in Korea, during a fictional war. However, the game is getting attention in South Korea not just from the country’s CoD fans, but also from its politicians.
South Korean politician Han Dong-hoon believes there are lessons to be drawn from Modern Warfare 4 in regard to what might happen to the country should issues between it and its neighbor, North Korea, escalate. So much so that Han has publicly urged the country’s president, Lee Jae Myung, to play through the new game’s campaign.
“I recommend the president play this game and feel firsthand what kind of devastation unfolds when defense preparedness falls short," Han wrote in a Facebook post spotted by The Korea Herald and shared by Dexerto. “I hope the image of a Seoul reduced to ashes in the game remains in the realm of fiction.”
There has been some pushback to Han’s suggestion, with people highlighting that urging not only the president, but others living in South Korea to play through what is ultimately a fictional campaign might stir up an unnecessary amount of fear and hate towards North Korea.
“North Korea’s invasion on June 25, 1950, was real history, and North Korea’s military threat remains an undeniable reality today,” Han replied to those with concerns over his push for the president to learn real-life lessons about war from a Call of Duty game.
