Sega has revealed a packed roadmap for year two of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds. The additional content coming to the game over the next 12 months will effectively confirm its status as the Super Smash Bros. of kart racing. However, digital deluxe edition owners who are now being asked to pay more for that DLC are understandably pretty upset.
There is a lot of stuff coming to CrossWorlds over the next year. The highlights are a Sanrio crossover that will add Hello Kitty and her friends to the roster, and a Final Fantasy 7 collab which will presumably add Cloud, Tifa, and a Midgar-themed track to the game.
All exciting stuff, and if you want it all, you can either buy CrossWorlds’ second season pass for $29.99, or the Year Two Digital Deluxe Edition for $59.99. Those are the only ways you can get access to all of the Sonic racing game’s exciting new content as it arrives, and therein lies the problem.
When Sega opened pre-orders for CrossWorlds’ original digital deluxe edition, it promised “All future paid downloadable content” would be included. That’s not something that has been misinterpreted or misremembered. It’s not even a promise Sega has quickly wiped all record of. The post making that promise is still up on the official CrossWorlds account right now.
Backlash from Sonic fans has quickly become so fierce and widespread that the post advertising the new year two edition of CrossWorlds has been hit with a community note. “Digital Deluxe Edition was officially marketed as including 'all future paid downloadable content' but Season Pass Two requires separate purchase by existing owners,” it reads.
