I spoke with Overwatch game director Aaron Keller and associate game director Alec Dawson about the game's future.
If 2026 had a defining trait for Overwatch, it was ambition. Celebrating its 10th anniversary, Blizzard's hero shooter went bigger than ever, dropping five new heroes at the start of the year and introducing a year-long narrative with The Reign of Talon. With Season 5 bringing that story to a close, it's fascinating to think how Blizzard can possibly top itself.
The good news is, the team isn't particularly interested in playing it safe. During a recent group interview I attended with game director Aaron Keller and associate game director Alec Dawson, I got a glimpse of what the next chapter looks like. While the developers aren't ready to spill all their secrets ahead of February's Overwatch Spotlight, there's already a clear message: 2027 won't simply be a repeat of 2026.
"We don't want players to feel like there is this tight playbook that we're following every year," Keller says. The team still wants to deliver a major annual release, but keeping players guessing is part of the appeal. "Yes, every year we do want to release something big," he says, teasing a February expansion that has been in development for quite some time.
Overwatch has spent the past two years focusing on Perks, Stadium , new heroes, and a renewed attention to storytelling. Though there's a difference between maintaining that momentum and making every update that follows an increasingly cool spectacle.
