The Game Boy Color is still finding ways to appeal to retro gaming fans decades after Nintendo first introduced the handheld, with a recent game standing out thanks to strong user reviews. While most modern gaming focuses on new consoles and upcoming releases, a dedicated community continues to make, collect, and play games designed for classic hardware. Modern-retro handhelds have also made it easier to revisit these older systems, with new physical cartridges letting players crack out their old Game Boy Color handhelds if they still have them.

ModRetro is one company helping keep that side of gaming alive, with its Chromatic handheld built around playing Game Boy and Game Boy Color games. Most, though not all, Chromatic games are specifically designed to work on the OG hardware (the Game Boy Color), including Tales of Monsterland DX.

The classic Game Boy had some great titles in its library. These are the rarest of the bunch.

One of those releases is Tales of Monsterland DX , a Game Boy Color platformer developed by Joel Jarman of Joel J Games. Players must save a village besieged by monsters by exploring an interconnected fantasy world, battling enemies, finding hidden items, and unlocking four magical forms that open up new areas. The game takes inspiration from classic platformers such as Wonder Boy and Kirby , while its DX edition brings full-color visuals, new scenes and animations, an original chiptune soundtrack, and battery-less saving. 99 .
