Survival games have become a huge part of the open-world genre, with more and more developers attempting to build a challenging yet rewarding experience to enjoy across a gigantic landscape. However, not all survival games are made equal, and some truly incredible titles have pushed past the crowd and proven themselves as the best.
In order to perfect such a popular formula, these games had to nail their world-building, combat, and the survival mechanics that tie it all together. As hard as that may seem, a select few open-world survival games have been able to make it happen, delivering unmatched survival excellence that virtually no other games in the genre can compete with.
Gamers seeking a Wild West game to play with their squad are in luck, as a new Valheim-style title is coming to Steam this year.
Conan Exiles takes the "survival" part of open-world survival very literally, turning the classic fantasy universe into a brutal landscape where anything can become a threat. You begin with little more than basic tools and need to gradually gather resources and survive in increasingly dangerous regions, each with their own biome-specific enemies and challenges.
The real appeal, however, is the freedom to build an entire existence from nothing. Small shelters can eventually become enormous fortresses, weak warriors can become unstoppable forces, and while there are a few rough edges, Conan Exiles remains an excellent fantasy survival sandbox that I think virtually anyone can get lost in.
