Manhwa readers in North America are in for a big shock. Tapas, one of the leading platforms hosting South Korean giants like Solo Leveling, is officially winding up business there. On March 31, 2027, Tapas is shutting down for good, and with it, any and all purchases fans have made during the platform’s over-a-decade-long run are sinking.
What’s worse, Tapas has officially come out and confirmed that no refunds will be made, and fans will simply have to take the loss. Both Manhwa readers and creators are about to be greatly affected by this major change, and sadly, there is nothing that can be done about it. The industry as a whole could be shifting very soon with price hikes and other changes to follow.
The Manhwa medium has been on the rise for quite some time now. Many fans were first introduced to Manhwa series when the likes of The God of High School and The Tower of God were released in 2020 with flashy anime adaptations. However, even these two successful anime series based on Manhwa would not be able to reach the heights touched by the giants of Japanese franchises.
The competition between manhwa and manga underwent a drastic change in 2024 when the massive IP Solo Leveling was adapted into an anime by Aniplex and A-1 Pictures. Solo Leveling quickly became a fan favorite for overseas viewers, and on Crunchyroll, it even became the number one anime of all time. Even in Japan, Solo Leveling has become quite popular, and with so much hype generated by this new series, Manhwa as a whole was affected positively.
