Last year, Lego broke the record for the most expensive set of all time by releasing its $1,000 Death Star. Now, it has broken the record for the biggest set ever with the Sagrada Familia, officially revealed earlier this year, and now it’s available to buy.
The Sagrada Familia set is a toy brick model of the iconic church in Barcelona. A building so magnificent, so intricate, that it required records to be broken for it to become Lego. At 12,060 pieces, not only is it the first Lego set to ever require more than 12,000 bricks to complete, but that means it is also the biggest Lego set of all time.
The title has been taken from Lego’s World Map, which held the record for so long that it has since been retired. The map was 11,695 pieces, so the Sagrada Familia hasn’t just beaten the old record; it has well and truly smashed it.
As for the Lego sets still in production that come closest to Sagrada Familia’s new record, the second biggest offering money can buy is the church’s fellow European landmark, the Eiffel Tower, at 10,001 pieces. The Titanic is now in third (9,090 pieces), the aforementioned Death Star fourth (9,023 pieces), and the latest Lord of the Rings set that lets you build your very own Minas Tirith rounds out the top five (8,278).
Okay, I’ve been putting off the painful part for long enough now. Sure, a 12,000-piece Lego set sounds cool, and the idea of tackling such a behemoth is incredibly appealing, but just how much does the Sagrada Familia set cost?
