Helen Chiang wants to put the rumors surrounding her exit from Microsoft to rest.
After serving at Microsoft for 21 years, including an eight-year stint as the studio head for the Minecraft franchise, Helen Chiang was appointed Xbox’s first chief operating officer amid a wave of change at the company in July 2026. After only three months in the role, however, Chiang left the organization last month, sparking industry-wide speculation over the circumstances surrounding her exit.
In the 10 days since the news of Chiang’s exit from Microsoft broke, the former Xbox COO has been the subject of a deluge of rumors, reports, and discussions over what may have prompted her role at the company to come to an end. On October 24, a report by Eurogamer cited a single anonymous internal source at Xbox who claimed that Chiang had been fired due to a “policy violation;” on social platforms, other observers speculated that she may have decided to leave the organization after being passed over for its chief executive role in favor of Xbox CEO Asha Sharma.
Today, November 2, Chiang broke her silence in the form of a LinkedIn post that forcefully denied the reports of her firing due to a policy violation and the rumors about her decision to leave due to being passed over for the CEO role. The 500-word post, titled “Clarity is Kindness,” clarified that Chiang has never leaked confidential Microsoft information to the press, nor that she left the company to join a competitor.
