To start the Illusory Pipa quest in Phantom Blade Zero, defeat the Bai Chilian, the Sacrificial Serpent, at the end of Crimson Forest. After defeating the boss, you'll arrive at the Place of Awakening bell, which is the start of the Village of Lu region.

Near the bell, you'll see a document lying on the ground to the left of the rope bridge called "Wulin Tales: Bai Chilian's Notes." This will include information on the Illusory Pipa's Head, Strings, and Backplate. Picking this document up will also add the Illusory Pipa quest to your quest log.

Right after crossing the rope bridge, you'll meet with Jewel, whom you can ask about the Illusory Pipa. She'll ask you to visit Myst's Tavern in Pangzhen.
