Grand Theft Auto 6 officially unlocks globally at midnight on November 19, and if you don't want to wait for your local release window, the New Zealand trick is the only working method to start playing GTA 6 up to a day early. Depending on whether you are playing on Xbox Series X|S or PlayStation 5, getting in ahead of schedule requires either a quick console location swap or a regional account workaround. Here is how to pull off the New Zealand trick on both consoles so you can play GTA 6 early.
Grand Theft Auto 6 players should be careful with their activation codes, as some come with restrictions that could render them useless.
Xbox Series X|S offers the cleanest and easiest way to play GTA 6 early. Since Xbox doesn't lock digital game licenses to specific regional storefronts, you can buy GTA 6 on your regular account and simply switch your console's system location.
Once your Xbox Series X|S boots back up, your system clock will check against the New Zealand Microsoft Store servers, allowing you to launch your preloaded copy of GTA 6 as soon as New Zealand hits midnight.
PlayStation 5 handles regional unlocks differently than Xbox. Your digital countdown timer on PS5 is hard-locked to the regional PlayStation Store where the purchase was made.
If you already pre-ordered GTA 6 on a US, UK, or European PSN account, changing your system time zone will not unlock the game early. If you pre-ordered digitally, you can cancel it anytime before the game's release date, provided you haven't started preloading the game on November 10th.
