Open-world RPGs are famous for the fact that they give players hundreds of things to do. However, this comes with the risk of the campaign running out of steam long before the endgame even starts, and quite a few releases end on a whimper rather than a scream. These final quests often determine how people remember their time with the game, which is a shame considering how much time players invest in exploring these enormous worlds.
Fortunately, some open-world RPGs maintain their momentum, and they treat the endgame as the ultimate climax that it should be. In fact, some titles become considerably more interesting at the end, especially when we take into account that players already know how everything works and are prepared to take on even more exciting challenges.
Dragon's Dogma 2 has a pretty ambitious approach to its endgame, as it introduces the Unmoored World, which is an altered version of Vermund and Battahl that players can access by reaching the game's true ending. Capcom transforms the entire environment; the seas have receded, exposing new areas, while a red sky and dangerous new creatures make everything feel very different from what you are used to seeing in the game.
For example, areas that were previously separated by water become connected, which in turn opens new routes and encourages players to revisit places they thought they had already explored. Of course, this is not all, because there are plenty of new enemies and encounters that make traveling dangerous again.
