Being the first major boss in Valor Mortis and one of the most mechanically complex enemies in the game, General Lothaire can provide a significant roadblock to many players, which took me longer to beat than I care to admit without the proper gear or techniques.

While the lack of different weapons and transmutations can make this fight a bit of a struggle early on, there are still several ways to help trivialize your second encounter with Lothaire using the following methods.

Starting off with General Lothaire's moveset, the two attacks he'll launch from a distance come in the form of a cannonball volley that fires three shots in a row, which you'll want to dodge right as the yellow glow reaches its brightest. General Lothaire will also launch himself towards you with an unlockable lunging attack, but the attack window is fairly generous and leaves a great opportunity for a powerful counterattack if you dodge right before it lands.

While you can definitely back away with a few dodges to give yourself time to reload or heal, you'll want to try sticking close to Lothaire for most of the fight here, which can make parrying his sword and spear attacks a lot easier than trying to measure the distance of when it will hit you from afar.

Using the fire transmutation will leave Lothaire stunned for a few seconds to deal more damage, and should be used whenever possible and recharged from shooting his vital points.
