Bungie co-founder and Halo and Destiny co-creator Jason Jones has launched Stone Kite, a new studio founded alongside former Destiny 2 narrative director Margaret Stohl. Both are longtime Bungie veterans with deep ties to the Destiny franchise, with Jones exiting the company earlier this year amid turbulent times for the studio.
Jason Jones' history with Bungie goes all the way back to the studio's founding in 1991. The former Bungie developer worked on early games like Marathon and Myth before serving as project lead on Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2. Following Halo's success, Jones then helped create and direct the original Destiny, which launched in 2014. His time at the company appears to have ended during Bungie's major layoffs in June 2026, when a Washington WARN filing listed the Chief Vision Officer position among the affected roles. Although the filing itself did not list specific employees, Jones' public title was that of the CVO.
Bungie shares a lengthy official update on the future of Marathon after seeing its extraction shooter lose players for the last six months.
The newly founded Stone Kite officially launched on October 1, with Margaret Stohl serving as CEO and Jones as co-founder. However, it is not being pitched as a conventional game studio. Instead, the team wants to build a new universe across several forms of entertainment from the beginning rather than create something in one medium and adapt it later. Stohl described the idea simply, stating, "Stone Kite is about breaking down those old media silos," and the studio calls its approach "fractal storytelling," with each medium designed to offer a different way into the same connected universe.
