We are just weeks away from The Game Awards 2026, gaming's biggest night, and big nominees like Grand Theft Auto 6 are already turning heads. Controversy has already been sparked by the recent news that Grand Theft Auto 6 will qualify despite its late November 19 launch. The title is potentially up for a slew of awards this year based on last year's categories, like Best in Accessibility, Best Action Game, Best Performance, Best Art Direction, Best Score/Music, and the ever-important Game of the Year.
This is specifically troublesome for voting, seemingly making it more challenging for a game to be assessed so soon after its release. Can a late-year release, especially one so big, properly be considered for accolades? Will folks have enough time to play with the new title before awards season? While many believe the hype surrounding the game and the franchise's massive reach will save it in voting, I am not convinced.
Grand Theft Auto 6 has now entered its final pre-release stretch where continued radio silence from Rockstar can still be viewed as normal.
According to The Game Awards website , games up for consideration must be made commercially available to players on or before Friday, November 20, 2026, at 9:00 PM PT to qualify for core categories. Luckily for GTA 6 , this ensures that the late-year title will count, falling just inside the window for qualification. Late-year additions have happened in the past , but GTA 6' s inclusion is an odd one, considering folks will have little time to play with before it is up for major accolades.
