GTA 6 is making some significant changes to how players move around Vice City, including one quality-of-life improvement that has been a long time coming for Rockstar Games. Although the developer has spent years perfecting its open-world formula, certain gameplay mechanics have remained largely unchanged across multiple releases. However, Rockstar is taking a different approach with GTA 6's gameplay.
Movement is particularly important in GTA 6, considering the sheer scale of its world and the number of activities available to Jason and Lucia. Rockstar has already discussed its efforts to improve realism and immersion in GTA 6, from more believable character animations to systems that respond to how players interact with their surroundings. However, the developer has also emphasized that realism shouldn't come at the expense of fun, with some mechanics simplified or removed entirely to avoid unnecessary frustration.
GTA 6 eliminates the need to repeatedly press a button to sprint, instead moving the action to the left sticks on both consoles. In previous entries, including GTA 5, players generally had to repeatedly tap X on PlayStation or A on Xbox to maintain their maximum running speed. With GTA 6, sprinting is instead activated by pressing the left analog stick, eliminating the need for constant button mashing.
The updated sprinting controls also bring GTA 6 in line with many modern third-person action games , where clicking the left analog stick has become the standard approach. Beyond convenience, the change could make it easier to control the camera while running, since players won't need to repeatedly move their right thumb between the face buttons and analog stick.
