A prominent game industry fund and Hollywood talent agency are teaming up to adapt games for TV and film.
Yesterday, game industry venture capital firm Griffin Gaming Partners and Hollywood talent agency Entertainment 360 announced the formation of Hitpoint Entertainment—a new production company dedicated to adapting video games for the world of TV and film.
According to news shared with GamesBeat, the new company will "source, develop, package, and produce adaptations" of selected video games, operating across a wide range of genres ranging from action, to comedy, to romance and beyond.
For those unfamiliar with Tinseltown moviemaking, don't expect Hitpoint to personally open a studio lot and start building movie sets for a Missile Command film. The new company appears to operate similarly to production companies like Story Kitchen (formerly DJ2 Entertainment), which has co-produced a number of video game adaptation hits like the Sonic The Hedgehog film series with established producers like Paramount Pictures.
Entertainment 360 has been making multiple inroads in the world of video game adaptations, most recently helping Atari and Universal pen an exclusive deal to adapt the former company's vaunted game franchises. As The Hollywood Reporter notes, a number of its clients are already working on video game-based projects like Nintendo and Sony Pictures' adaptation of The Legend of Zelda.
Hitpoint's founders stated that the company's strategic focus will be on identifying video games ripe for adaptation "early," without needing to wait years for a franchise to develop.
