The word friendslop has become a highly debated one as gamers argue over whether the term is endearing or offensive. Well, whether you like it or not, it is now here to stay, as Collins has listed it among its best words of 2026 and officially added it to the dictionary.
Each year, Collins crowns a word of the year and lists some runners-up that will be added to its dictionary alongside it. Although friendslop made the cut for 2026, it lost out on Collins’ word of the year crown to mogging, a word that is also commonly used in the video game world but is used in far more walks of life.
Friendslop, however, is a term exclusively for video games. “A type of low-budget, independently produced video game, designed to be played casually with a group of friends,” its new dictionary definition reads. A definition that will likely split gamers, but there’s no arguing with the dictionary.
Who am I kidding? Some gamers can and will argue with anything.
It’s the “low-budget” part of friendslop’s definition that has been the driving force behind it being such a divisive word. Friendslop games tend to be incredibly popular, typically indie games that blow up on Steam and attract tens, sometimes hundreds, of thousands of people. So to some, to refer to it as “slop” is implying that it’s less than.
Many of those who play games that fall under the friendslop definition don’t necessarily see the word as derogatory, though.
