An EA office in Madrid has been vandalized by disgruntled fans, protesting the recently confirmed cancellation of the in-development Mass Effect Universe. The return of the Mass Effect franchise was officially shelved after EA confirmed that developer BioWare was shut down.
EA shocked the gaming industry with the announcement that BioWare will be closing after more than 30 years. The studio was first founded in 1995 and produced a wealth of popular franchises based on beloved IPs, including Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. BioWare saw some of its greatest success stories during the PS3 era, debuting a pair of beloved original franchises in Mass Effect and Dragon Age. Now, with BioWare closing and the Mass Effect series confirmed to be shelved, fans are taking their protest of the closure directly to EA's offices.
The next Mass Effect game has officially been canceled, which could mean major trouble for this long-awaited Ubisoft project.
A post shared on the Mass Effect subreddit depicted an apparent act of vandalism at EA's offices in Madrid. The image showed a message written both on the walkway leading to EA's main Spanish office and on the side of the building, reading "Save Mass Effect " in black paint. No individual has come forward to claim responsibility for the vandalism at the Madrid offices, though members of the ongoing #SaveMassEffect campaign have confirmed that it was not done by anyone associated with the group.
