Of the many races and species that have been introduced in the Dragon Ball franchise, the Saiyans are known as the ultimate warrior race, as well as fearsome conquerors. Their reputation was earned before the series even began, and they continue to show their brutal strength with each new release.
However, the history of the Saiyan race goes back centuries. Because of this, many incredible warriors have popped up throughout the various generations of the Saiyan race, and these are the strongest of each known generation in all of Dragon Ball.
As the main fighter of Universe 7 and one of its strongest inhabitants, Goku had quite a few rivals at various points of the story.
Dating back to when the Saiyan race first began, one Saiyan legend is remembered to this day, and that is Yamoshi. Known for being the first-ever Super Saiyan and Golden Great Ape, he and five of his righteous comrades led a rebellion against the ancient evil Saiyans, against whom Yamoshi would unlock his legendary power.
Very little else is known about this mysterious character, but it is said that, upon his death, Yamoshi's spirit wandered in hopes of finding the body of a righteous Saiyan like himself to inhabit, inspiring the legend of the Super Saiyan God. Due to this, his power was prophesied even by Beerus, which says quite a lot about his strength.
Although Goku would later come to prove everyone wrong, Saiyan society was generally predicated on the class-ranking system, and it had been this way for generations.
