Despite hardware worries and rising costs, Sony says PlayStation 6 development is on track and "progressing as scheduled"

Today, Thursday 5th November, 2026, Sony shared its latest financial results, reporting on the second quarter of financial year 2026 for the company. In a wide-ranging set of statements, we learned that the company's overall profits have been charged by the box office success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and that its annual profit outlook has been raised following a particularly successful quarter.

As for PlayStation, Sony CFO Lin Tao hinted at the status of the PlayStation 6 - not yet named as such - which is currently being worked on in the company's gaming division. She noted that the console is "progressing as scheduled" and that staff are making "solid progress" on the machine (thanks, VGC). Tao also revealed that it's been a strong year for the PS5; total sales for the console have reached 97.9 million, thanks to a further 2.6 million sales throughout July, August and September 2026.

The most interesting bytes of information teased out of this call relate to Tao's claim that Sony has been able to offset the rise in memory costs via cost reductions and price increases, all helped by a yearly operating income boost of 89 percent. Sony notes that it has secured enough memory hardware for its next business year, which helps prepare the ground for PlayStation 6 production which should kick off in earnest next year.

"Although new PS5 unit sales are gradually declining as expected at this stage of the console life cycle, the PlayStation platform continues to expand and grow in a stable manner," Tao explained.
