Echo Weaver, the new Metroidvania from Moonlight Kids and Akupara Games, explores the familiar time loop concept established by films like Groundhog Day, but leans more aggressively into the science-fiction aspects. A repeating journey through time begins as a hero falls from a great height and lands in a shallow pool of brackish water. No matter how far they venture during the next 13 in-game hours, they’ll always start the next loop in that familiar chamber.
You’ll soon learn that the hero is the rarest of creations: a weaver, and the presumed last of their kind. Few humans remain alive in the wake of a horrific event. The only people who might survive to engineer civilization’s rebirth won’t live long enough to do so unless you help the weaver change the course of events already set in motion. But that will take some doing.
At the start of the game, very little is clear. You know nothing about who you are, except that you can run, jump, and slide. Also, you have a “pizza cat” for an ally. It’s a ghostly apparition that pops up occasionally to offer witty remarks that rarely contain useful information, because it gains new knowledge as you do. You both learn about the world by exploring “echoes” of the events that led to your arrival in that chamber. Gradually, by watching echoes of past events that in some cases date back many years, you’ll piece together a tragic backstory that puts ambition, friendship, betrayal, and possibly even redemption in the spotlight.
