Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 has attracted more than 200,000 concurrent Steam players during its opening weekend, although Infinity Ward's latest shooter hasn't quite matched the launch of Black Ops 6. The early Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 numbers nevertheless point to a much stronger start than last year's Black Ops 7.
Fans should keep in mind one important caveat with these numbers. Call of Duty's Steam player count is tracked through the shared Call of Duty application rather than a separate listing for each release, so the total can include people playing Warzone and other supported games. The same complication applied to Black Ops 6 player counts during its launch weekend, however, so the two spikes are still useful for a rough comparison, even if they don't reflect exact player counts for either game. Steam therefore offers the clearest public comparison available right now, though it's not perfectly clean.
Call of Duty is already selling players on something new in 2027, making Modern Warfare 4's familiar direction feel dated before it even launches.
The latest Steam player numbers for the shared Call of Duty app used by both MW4 and BO6 show a peak of 227,434 concurrent Steam users during Modern Warfare 4 's launch window , compared with roughly 306,460 around the release of Black Ops 6 in October 2024. The numbers come via SteamDB and put MW4 about 26% behind BO6 , with a gap of roughly 79,000 concurrent users. It is still a considerable improvement over Black Ops 7 , however, which failed to generate anything close to either game's launch spike at roughly 100,000 concurrent Steam users during its launch weekend.
