EA's forced closure of BioWare, the studio behind Mass Effect, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and Dragon Age, has ended one of the most legendary 31-year runs the games industry has ever seen. Understandably, most fans are either heartbroken or angry — but far too many reactions online since the announcement have been hunting for a single culprit, whether it's the culture-war crowd blaming Dragon Age: The Veilguard or fans blaming EA's new private-equity owners. And that's not right, because most reporting on BioWare points to a slower death, made by a thousand more cuts, and the final one says more about EA's future than The Veilguardstudio's past.
