Helen Chiang reportedly departs Xbox COO role after three months

One of the pieces of news Xbox boss Asha Sharma dropped during the company’s massive “reset” was that the company would get its first-ever chief operating officer. That COO was Helen Chiang, formerly the head of Minecraft at Mojang. Now, mere months after this announcement, Chiang is leaving Microsoft.

In a memo seen by The Verge, Sharma announced that Chiang’s departure. She said, “I’m grateful for her years of service and wish her well.” Chiang’s responsibilities are being shared by other executives at the moment and, says Sharma, “We’ll share more on COO leadership as plans are finalized.”

Chiang had worked at Microsoft for over 21 years, and previously served Mojang as studio head and leader of the Minecraft franchise. She also worked on building the Xbox Live service. No reason was given for her departure.

When Sharma announced Chiang’s appointment to the role, she said in an Xbox Wire post, “[Chiang] will bring our businesses together under one operating model, making sure we make clear investment decisions, learn from our successes and failures, and hold ourselves accountable for results.
