Best Factions in Total War Shogun 2 (2026)

The victory conditions in Total War: Shogun 2 are pretty straightforward, but each clan carries different advantages and disadvantages. Some clans are close to the campaign's main objective, Kyoto, but they're vulnerable to other clans. With different land placements and abilities, selecting the best faction in Shogun 2 requires you to know their strengths and weaknesses, which we'll discuss below.

The Total War franchise's legacy is studded with iconic strategy games. Here's how they stack up.

If you enjoy using cavalry units in battles, then no clan will satisfy you better than Takeda. This faction excels at cavalry units, which gives Takeda an edge in battles, especially if the opponent lacks the right units to stop cavalry.

Almost every cavalry unit has a special Takeda version that comes with boosted stats. Takeda Katana Cavalry comes with +2 Melee Attack and +1 Melee Defense. These stats might be different between Takeda versions of other units, but some stat boosts are guaranteed across all cavalry units, including improved morale and reduced upkeep costs. In the same example, the Takeda version of Katana Cavalry has an upkeep cost of 25 coins less.

Sometimes, this also impacts the recruitment cost as well. The Takeda version of Katana Cavalry costs 850 coins for recruitment, while the base version for other clans costs 950 coins. This is a significant saving of resources for Takeda players.

Takeda is near the southern coast, but it doesn't have direct access to the ocean. The clan is not adjacent to Kyoto either, but it is close, with two provinces separating it from Kyoto.
