10 Best Star Wars Villains, Ranked By Competence

The Star Wars universe is crammed with scum and villainy of the highest order. Some villains rely on brute strength, others on political influence, and a few are so good at their jobs that even their enemies have a grudging respect for them. But being powerful isn't the same as being competent.

The best Star Wars villains know how to ensnare and manipulate their opponents, while the ineffective antagonists are usually undone by their own arrogance and hubris. The most competent villains in Star Wars prove themselves with their sheer intellect, manipulative tactics, long-term planning, adaptability, and military command.

The Empire is full of ruthless, ambitious, and surprisingly capable Star Wars villains, but not every Imperial Officer is created equal.

There are plenty of colorful villains in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, from the spider-like Admiral Trench to the robotic, steam-punkesque Wat Tambor. They are mostly devoid of personality, though, which is why the Jedi Knight Pong Krell stands out. Perhaps the most controversial pick on this list, Pong Krell is not a subtle double agent. He is introduced as an experienced battlefield commander with a formidable reputation, winning several battles during the Clone Wars by sending waves of clone troopers into harm's way and leading to the deaths of hundreds of men. Throughout The Clone Wars, the Republic treats the clones more like disposable soldiers than people, but Krell takes this prejudice to the next level.

During the Battle of Umbara, Krell's aggressive tactics produce victories, but his willingness to sacrifice his own men draws suspicion.
